Permanent Gateway Sign: The Heart of Earlwood

The City of Canterbury-Bankstown has received funding under the NSW Government’s Vibrant Streets Package –Open Streets Program 2025-2028 Open Streets Program | Transport for NSW which aims to inject vibrancy to our streets.

To ensure the spirit of Earlwood's vibrant community is permanently celebrated, CBCity is proposing to install an eye-catching placemaking sign at the prominent intersection of Homer Street and Clarke Street.

This initiative goes beyond simple signage; it's a strategic move to establish a lasting, welcoming gateway to the area locals known as the "Heart of Earlwood."

This location was chosen specifically because both sides of the street feature a bustling hub of commerce and activity, including local cafés, supermarkets, diverse retail shops and a historical hotel. By marking this intersection, the sign will instantly:

· Elevate the streetscape: it will serve as a powerful visual landmark, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the area and clearly defining the village centre for both locals and visitors.

· Strengthen community ties: this permanent fixture is part of Council's ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships between local businesses, residents and the broader community, promoting a sense of shared identity and ownership.

· Boost local economy: by formally identifying the commercial centre, the sign will invite more foot traffic, encouraging locals and visitors alike to explore and support the unique offerings of Earlwood's diverse businesses.

· Foster pride and belonging: ultimately, this landmark will help instil a greater sense of pride and belonging among residents, celebrating Earlwood's unique cultural heritage and identity for generations to come.

Council is dedicated to working closely with all stakeholders – including local businesses, residents and community groups – to ensure the final design of this permanent feature truly reflects the spirit and rich heritage of Earlwood.

CBCity has received funding under the NSW Government’s Vibrant Streets Package –Open Streets Program 2025-2028, to temporarily close streets to vehicles for a day, or series of days, and open them to people with placemaking activations during the Love Earlwood Festival which was held on Saturday 20 September 2025 and will run in September for a total of three years.

The Open Streets Program aims to inject vibrancy into our streets and help create thriving local places that support businesses, creative sectors, and the community through events and activations. The Program will help transform our streets into more vibrant public spaces, with creative and cultural activations in the short term, and the trial of place management strategies to support sustainable activation in the long term.

Our streets are key public spaces that play a critical role in not only transportation, but in supporting local businesses, community connection and physical and mental well-being.

Earlwood is home to a vibrant and diverse cultural community, and CBCity is committed to celebrating and supporting this unique identity. As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships between local businesses, residents and the broader community, we are proposing the installation of a permanent placemaking sign at the intersection of Homer Street and Clarke Street.
