City of Canterbury Bankstown (Council) will be upgrading the playground at George Cayley Reserve, Punchbowl to improve safety and create a more welcoming and inclusive space.

The new design will offer better play opportunities for children aged 2–12 and position the playground to align with how the community uses the reserve.

This upgrade is part of Council’s Playgrounds and Play Spaces Strategic Plan and has been identified as a priority project in the 2026/27 Capital Works Program.

The proposed upgrades involve the removal of the existing playground and associated infrastructure, which is no longer fit-for-purpose and the re-establishment of that area as a grassed lawn.

A safer and more accessible playground in line with current standards will be constructed in the north-western section of the reserve, offering:

  • improved passive surveillance
  • natural shade from retained mature trees
  • new seating
  • landscape improvements
  • an accessible concrete footpath connecting the playground to Torrens Street

Community feedback will help shape the details of the final design – such as the layout, types of play equipment, access paths and landscaping – to ensure the new playground truly reflects local needs and supports a space the whole community can enjoy.
