To commemorate the life and community contribution of the late Grant Lee, Council is proposing renaming the separated northern section of Nugent Park to Grant Lee Square.

Grant LeeGrant Lee was a well-known local leader who dedicated nearly two decades to serving the Bankstown community. He was elected to the former Bankstown City Council in 1991, representing North Ward for 19 years. He went on to serve as Mayor from 1995-96 and as Deputy Mayor on two occasions.

Beyond his role on Council, Grant was also involved in community life across a wide range of interests. He was a lifelong supporter of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and a passionate advocate for local football. Grant generously gave his time as a volunteer and committee member, particularly with the Bankstown City Lions Football Club. From his early involvement with the Yagoona Lions to his later years with the Bankstown City Lions, he helped foster community participation, teamwork and local pride through sport.

Grant Lee passed away in late 2025 and in recognition of his lasting contribution, Council resolved at its Ordinary Meeting on 25 October 2025 to explore an appropriate and permanent way to acknowledge Grant Lee’s service to the community. His family has expressed their support for the proposal.

This proposed naming honours Grant Lee’s long-standing commitment to public service, community leadership and civic life in Bankstown.

The location has been chosen for several reasons:

  • It is situated in northern Bankstown, reflecting the area Grant Lee represented as a Councillor for almost 20 years
  • The plaza is a welcoming public gathering place, aligning with his strong belief in community participation, connection and inclusive community life
  • Naming the northern plaza will help clearly distinguish it from Nugent Park on the southern side of the railway line.
