Background

Council, the Greater Cities Commission and the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment are creating a long-term vision for the future of Canterbury Racecourse.

This is a collaborative project between Council, the Greater Cities Commission and the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, and includes the involvement of other agencies as well as the Australian Turf Club. The project stems from Council’s Local Strategic Planning Statement, which identified investigating the appropriate balance of uses on the site, including open space, should the Australian Turf Club cease operations on the site.

As part of the early planning phase of the project, Council has established a Community Voice Panel to share ideas and inform the process. Technical studies and design processes are also underway to help set a vision for the site.

The Place Strategy process is underway and will inform the development of the Canterbury Local Centre Master Plan.
