Background

The City of Canterbury-Bankstown is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Australia. It is also home to over 20.5% of seniors over the age of 60. Many residents have lived here their whole life and others have arrived as migrants or refugees to enjoy the richness of the community or to live with family. Seniors in the community face challenges of ageing and discrimination, social isolation due to language, transport and access needs.

The Plan

The CBCity Positive Ageing Plan 2024-2028 is Council’s commitment that we have asked, heard and now are actioning the feedback provided to us on how we can make Canterbury-Bankstown more accessible, inclusive and welcoming of seniors. Council is committed to adjust our practices to ensure seniors remain actively engaged and have a positive lifestyle in the City of Canterbury Bankstown.

  • Priority 1 – Living in aged friendly environments
  • Priority 2 – Participating in inclusive communities
  • Priority 3 – Staying safe, active and healthy
  • Priority 4 – Being resilient and informed
  • Priority 5 – Living in a Dementia Friendly City

What we heard

The development of the Plan was a result of community engagement, analysis of local dementia data and stakeholder consultation. Community engagement for the of this Plan was undertaken over several years due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the challenges and issues experienced by our seniors include:

  • Access to parking, ramps, handrails and footpaths
  • Ageism and age discrimination
  • Social isolation
  • Increase in dementia amongst older people

Council will collaborate with community partners to execute these actions, aiming to create an inclusive and safe space for seniors to age in their environment.
