Background

Each year Council seeks to improve the safety on our roads by seeking funding from Federal and State Government programs. The projects target those road locations where crashes are occurring or areas with a high crash risk.

Therefore, as part of Council’s 2023/24 Capital Works Program, we are proposing to construct a raised pedestrian crossing outside HNo. 159 Acacia Avenue, Greenacre.

This proposal

The proposed location has high pedestrian activity due to being in proximity of the newly built Greenacre Splash Park and Greenacre Public School. There is high demand for pedestrian activity around this precinct particularly during school drop off and pick up times and on weekends while sporting activities take place at the nearby Roberts Park.

The Splash Park is also open 24/7 and is anticipated to attract high pedestrian and traffic movements, particularly during the summer months. The on-site carpark only provides a limited number of parking spaces; therefore, nearby on-street parking will have increased demand which will result in additional pedestrian movements across the local streets.

The existing raised threshold on Acacia Avenue will be inadequate to accommodate the demand as it does not provide priority for pedestrians.

Therefore, Council has identified that the existing raised threshold should be replaced by a raised pedestrian crossing to create a safer environment for pedestrian and traffic movements.

Council has applied for funding under Transport for NSW’s Active Transport program and is currently completing consultation in order to understand the community’s feedback to the proposal. The implementation of the crossing will be subject to funding availability.

As a part of the proposed design, there will be a loss of six (6) parking spots.

This project is in line with Council’s vision of a ‘moving and integrated’ City, whereby we are improving the movement around our City for all users whilst also being a ‘safe and strong’ City.
