Background

Beamish Street and Brighton Avenue run through the Campsie Town Centre. There is no safe crossing point on Beamish Street north of Brighton Avenue, within the retail precinct. The lack of a pedestrian crossing facility in this location surrounded by businesses, apartment buildings and the Lofts Gardens raises safety concerns for pedestrians travelling throughout the area.

This proposal

As part of Council’s 2023/24 Capital Works Program, we are proposing to install a pedestrian refuge island at the intersection of Brighton Avenue and Beamish Street. This will create a safer environment for both vehicle and pedestrian movements. As a result of the proposal, there will be a loss of two (2) parking spots.

Council has applied for funding under Transport for NSW’s Active Transport program and is currently completing consultation to understand the community’s feedback to the proposal. The implementation of the crossing will be subject to community feedback and funding availability.

This project is in line with Council’s vision of a ‘moving and integrated’ City, whereby we are improving the movement around our City for all users whilst also being a ‘safe and strong’ City.
