Thank you for having your say on the Co-naming of Council Ward

6 October 2021

This project saw our wards co-named with Indigenous names.

On 17 November 2020, Council resolved to co-name the five Council wards with Aboriginal terms in line with our Reconciliation Action Plan. The Plan aims to ‘investigate opportunities to recognise the culture and heritage of the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in local government infrastructure and environment’.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Working Party developed options for names from research into Dharug language, sites of significance, and local stories.

Between 15 June 2021 – 12 August 2021, we asked the community to choose from two names for each ward. The project garnered great interest from the community with strong support for the co-naming initiative.

The community chose the following names for each ward:

Bankstown

Bass Hill

Canterbury

Council resolved to adopt the Indigenous co-names in the September Council meeting. You can see the minutes here.

We thank the community for their support and engagement with this project.
