Cultural precincts are areas that recognise and celebrate the unique contributions people from a particular culture or cultures make to a location. For example, through starting businesses such as restaurants, retail shops and language centres and sharing their culture and traditions with the wider community. A primary purpose of cultural precincts is to create concentrated and vibrant hubs that become focal points for celebrating and promoting culture and attracting visitors and tourists, as well as locals.

Yes, precincts can also be formed based on factors other than specific cultural groups, such as Sydney’s Darling Harbour, a waterfront precinct that is a mix of recreational facilities, cultural attractions and entertainment and includes the Powerhouse Museum, the International Convention and Exhibition Centre, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium etc. Another example is Federation Square in Melbourne, a bustling cultural precinct, in this case culture being defined as the arts etc as opposed to a particular people or society. It includes cultural institutions (e.g. the National Gallery of Victoria), architectural landmarks and public spaces

Council will do further community consultation to identify locations. It may be just one (1) or a few ideas that are developed into cultural precincts.

We recognise that Canterbury-Bankstown has a rich and evolving multicultural history. There are cultures whose presence has impacted the City for many decades such as the Lebanese, Vietnamese and Greek and emerging cultures who have come to call our City home more recently such as those from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, China and Pakistan. If the idea goes ahead, precincts associated with older as well as emerging (or newer) cultures can be selected.
