Background

The City of Canterbury Bankstown (CBCity) is a vibrant and diverse community, embracing people from all walks of life, representing over 100 nationalities and speaking more than 140 languages.

We take great pride in our rich cultural diversity, which is reflected in our delicious cuisine, various faiths and the multitude of languages that paint our streets with life.

Exploring the idea

At a recent Council meeting on May 23, 2023, we decided to engage the community in a discussion about identifying, developing, and promoting cultural districts in our city.

Neighbouring councils have already acknowledged cultural districts such as Little Greece and Little Vietnam.

Now, we're turning to you, the people at the heart of CBCity, to ask a simple yet important question: Would you like to see similar initiatives right here?

Currently, we already have informal cultural districts like:

  • Saigon Place in Bankstown, a tribute to the Vietnamese community.
  • Haldon Street in Lakemba, a melting pot of people and businesses from Pakistan, Indonesia, Lebanon, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, united by the Muslim faith.

We're here to find what you think about seeing official cultural precincts in CBCity.

Your thoughts matter, and we're excited to hear them!
