Overview

The aim of the SASSi Campsie project (Streets as Shared Spaces in Campsie) is to trial temporary, innovative designs to support the local businesses and community. The installations will create opportunities for more day and night time activities and provide opportunities for the community to engage with each other and local businesses.

The project will encourage stronger pedestrian links from Beamish Street through to Anzac Park by creating a ‘magic carpet’ through Anzac Mall. SASSi Campsie will bring the community and visitors to the area, supporting local businesses and community activities.

The SASSi Campsie project is funded by NSW Department of Planning Environment’s Streets as Shared Spaces (SASS) Program.

This proposal

Anzac Mall is an important space for Campsie residents and businesses. Council will be carrying out short-term trials and installations under the Streets as Shared Spaces Program to guide future improvements to the space.

The SASSi Campsie project includes Anzac Mall, Park and Square. It will run from October 2022 to February 2023.

The project includes:

Temporary street installations:

  • extension of the Anzac Square shared zone to prioritise pedestrian movement and safety and enhance access to Campsie Station and surrounding areas;
  • festive lighting to encourage evening visitation;
  • a sidewalk parklet, fun seating options for outdoor dining, social gatherings, study and more;
  • innovations such as solar powered WiFi in the new pop-up seating;
  • a ‘magic carpet’ pathway link; and
  • street art appealing to all ages and encouraging visitors to connect, stay and play.

Short-term traffic trials:

  • extension of Anzac Square shared zone with street treatments;
  • creation of a new temporary shared zone with a 10 kilometres per hour speed limit; and
  • relocation of two loading zone spaces affecting two x 2hr parking spaces.

Council will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the trial installations so that findings can be used to guide future improvements to Campsie. The temporary installations may stay in place for longer if the installations are deemed successful and supported by the community.
