Consultation has concluded
As part of Council’s Community Strategic Plan CB2036, our vision is to provide an accessible city with great local destinations and many options to get around.
This vision will come to life in the Tasker Park Precinct with improved connections to Canterbury Town Centre and existing transport links, with proposed upgrades including:
- Charles Street Bridge: new shared pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Cooks River at Charles Street, Canterbury.
- Phillips Avenue and Tasker Park cycleway and footpath: new footpath and a separate cycleway from the new Charles Street Bridge, through Tasker Park and along Phillips Avenue to Wairoa Street.
- Charles Street landing and Broughton Street railway underpass: the new Charles Street Bridge will connect into the Canterbury Town Centre and the Cooks River shared path via the landing on the corner of Charles and Broughton Streets.
You can view our plans below and have your say until 31 October as part of the wider Tasker Park Precinct consultation. Your feedback will help us shape final designs and ensure these upgrades meet the needs of our community.

🔴Charles Street Bridge
This will feature a new shared pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Cooks River at Charles Street, Canterbury. The Charles Street Bridge will significantly improve connections across the river between the Tasker Park Precinct, Canterbury Town Centre and the Cooks River shared path. It will also form a critical part of the Sydney Metro East-West Cycling and Pedestrian Link.
Key features of the concept design for Charles Street Bridge include:
- A four-metre-wide deck offering ample space for all users
- Single span design that respects the river and ensures the bridge does not disturb its flow, while enabling watercraft to pass below unimpeded
- The bridge will be constructed from weathering steel, providing a tough and low maintenance structure
- Handrail LED lighting, providing subtle but effective brightness for visibility. A lighting plan for the bridge and path network will be developed during the detailed design stage.
The existing pedestrian bridge will remain in place until the new bridge is open for use.

🟣Railway Underpass
Broughton Street railway underpass
This upgrade will involve improvements to the Broughton Street railway underpass to provide improved shared path connection, re-aligning the traffic lanes to provide a three-metre-wide shared path at the railway underpass. Dual traffic lanes will be retained, allowing traffic to continue to use the underpass, while also providing a comfortable and safe path for pedestrians and cyclists.
Charles Street Bridge landing
The new Charles Street Bridge will connect into the Canterbury Town Centre and the Cooks River shared path via the landing on the corner of Charles and Broughton Streets. The concept design will maximise the available space in this area and creating a shared plaza. New pavement treatments and shared path upgrades will enhance safety and accessibility for everyone. Features include:
- New Charles Street bridge
- Bridge landing area with feature paving
- Northern connection to the Cooks River path
- Southern connection to the Cooks River path with a gentler slope for safer pedestrian and cyclist use
- New pedestrian crossing for improved pedestrian and cycle safety.
This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government’s Get NSW Active program.
🔵Cycleway and footpath
The concept design will include a new upgraded footpath and a separate cycleway starting from the new Charles Street Bridge, through Tasker Park and along Phillips Avenue to Wairoa Street.
Key features of the concept design will include:
- A concrete footpath and cycleway, separated by landscape planting, providing a safer and more enjoyable experience for pedestrians, cyclists, road users and the public.
- Planting of trees along Phillips Avenue and additional trees within Tasker Park
- A new crossing on Wairoa Street connecting to the shared path on Wairoa Lane
- Pathway lighting for safety and accessibility. A lighting plan will be developed during the detailed design stage, which considers the needs of path users and the impact on the local environment.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Active Transport Fund and NSW Government’s Get NSW Active program.
